TOEIC and Beyond

TOEIC and Beyond

The Test Of English for International Communication is a tremendous yet exhilarating evaluation for your English skills. Whether you plan on just testing the waters of your English level or you desire to be a part of the English language teaching community, taking the TOEIC is a great start. (dry run)

When I first arrived here in Thailand, I was mesmerized and challenged at the same time. Having an ample amount of free time; (husband being away for work most of the time) I often wondered what I can do that is enjoyable and productive at the same time. Then I stumbled upon the idea of taking the TEFL course, a 120 hours of extensive learning and training that gives you the opportunity to teach here in the Kingdom. Cillian Hayes, my instructor at the time, and I write this with much emphasis that he is the most knowledgeable and brilliant person to learn the course with. And needless to say, he helped me realize my inner love for teaching! The good news? He is still extending that brilliance as the TEFL genius mentor at SLS Language Training Centre!

Right after my TEFL completion, I yearned to go back to sharing and helping Thai children in learning the English language. I was then given the opportunity to do so and joined the SLS Language Training Centre team. An outstanding team to be a part of, may I add. Seven years later, I am elated to still be a part of the team.

As a part of the Non Native Speakers of English community, one major requirement of the Ministry of Education here in Thailand to be able to teach is a TOEIC score. And this is why I share this story to help you navigate on how you could successfully take the exam. Did I mention I have taken the exam numerous times?

Never underestimate taking the TOEIC exam or any other English tests for that matter. With TOEIC, you can either choose to take Listening and Reading tests or the Speaking and Writing tests. I could only share my experiences with the Listening and Reading per sè. The test is 2 hours long! You are given 45 minutes with listening and 75 minutes with reading. And my verdict for this exam; it’s a TRICKY test! ? The best ammunition you can have, BE READY, PRACTICE and FOCUS! Basically knowing what you are getting into is a PLUS!

There are now 3 testing centers here in Thailand. One in Bangkok, another in Chiangmai and just recently they have added another location in Chonburi. However, the Chonburi location, if I’m not mistaken, has limited schedules that can be filled very quickly.

If you are planning to take the exam here in Thailand, I would suggest calling the testing centers first, wherever your nearest location is and the most convenient for you of course. Make an appointment, fees and rules may vary from the centers you plan on taking the test from. Once you have secured a date, start to practice and I mean, lots of practice. We offer such assistance at SLS Language Training Centre. On the test day, arrive at least 1 hour prior to your test time. This is to complete your registration at the testing centre. Upon registration completion, you will be given two choices to claim the exam results, a) sent to your chosen address with extra fee; or b) pick up the next day. Only bring cash and your identification (passport). Mobile phones will be kept at the registration area before entering the testing room. You will be searched thoroughly, no coins or keys allowed. They provide all the things needed for the exam, so you must not bother yourself from bringing anything other than what I have mentioned. Once in the testing room, you will not be permitted to go out anymore, so make sure you are fully hydrated and well nourished. You may also wanna use the restroom prior. Expect to be in the room for at least 2.5 to 3 hours. You may not exit the room until the examiner clears you to go.The upside, the result is valid for 2 years! Right there and then, you will feel a big weight lifted off of your shoulders after ?

As I have mentioned above, our school, SLS, offers assistance to ensure you may be successful in taking the TOEIC exam. So check out our website and let’s talk! I can be your TOEIC advisor!
